What
is Pilates?
Invented
in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, Pilates was
created by combining Eastern modes of exercise such as Yoga
and T'ai C'hi with Western practices such as aerobics and
weight training. Pilates is a movement of techniques as
well as a lifelong learning process of training your body
with an expectation toward health and wellness.

Can I benefit from Pilates?

promotes good posture through breathing, proper muscle use
and coordination building core strength and flexibility
and the use of resistance based equipment developed by Joseph
Pilates. The Pilates body is not one of bulk and restricted
movement. The Pilates body is one of agile, long, lean,
toned and trim body. Other benefits include:
Relaxation
and stress reduction, encouraging overall health
- Mental
and physical control of the body, leading to actual re-training
of neural pathways and physical grace of movement
- Gentle,
safe, yet challenging non-impact exercises that build
abdominal and back muscles, which stabilize the spine,
protect the lower back and tighten and strengthen the
buttocks
- Improve
posture and stability, better coordination and balance
- Prevention
of body pains and limitations associated with aging
- Increased

The
Pilates Method
The
Pilates Method of Body Conditioning was created over 70
years ago. It can be compared to Yoga in that it teaches
correct breathing and concentration on the correct execution
of every movement. Correct breathing helps you to get the
most out of your muscles. Focusing on every movement strengthens
the connection between your mind and your body, and creates
long lean muscles. Much attention is given to the deep postural
muscles which support the body; for example, the deep layers
of the abdominal muscles. Stretching
is emphasized before, during, and after the workout. Strengthening
your center while keeping it stretched and flexible creates
better posture, greater ease of movement, more regal carriage
and decreased incidence of injuries and back pain.

Pilates
for General Fitness
Pilates
was once known almost exclusively to the dance world, but
in 70 years of existence, it has become increasingly known
to the general populace for it's gentle-to-the-joints approach
to fitness. It is extremely useful for both the prevention
of and rehabilitation of injuries. For the "Baby Boomer"
generation tired of the wear and tear on their joints from
recent exercise fads, the Pilates Technique is the way to
get a sculpted, healthy body without injuries. You can identify
your strengths and weaknesses with Pilates and focus on
repairing scar tissue and muscle imbalances.

Every
Session
Every
Pilates session starts out with breathing and relaxation
exercises. This allows you to relax into a more neutral
alignment before you begin any strenuous work. You will
then perform several warm-up exercises designed to loosen
the back, neck, chest, hip joints and any other place you
may need release before you begin. Only then do you begin
the actual exercises. Every exercise is performed with perfect
alignment and is modified as necessary to ensure that the
alignment is maintained throughout each set. The muscles
are strengthened in such a way as to create perfect balance
in the body. Whenever a muscle is worked, its antagonist
muscle is also worked. Rather than doing many repetitions
of one movement, such as doing 50 "crunches",
in Pilates, the client performs 5-10 repetitions of many
different exercises designed to affect the muscles slightly
in a variety of ways. There is an emphasis and deliberate
control in each exercise. Both the shortening and lengthening
contractions of the muscles are worked, creating the long,
lean musculature.
The
Pilates Method is for everyone...General Fitness, Back Problems,
Neck, and Shoulder pain, Pregnancy, you name it. Pilates
provides a sanctuary away from the rush of life and you
get a workout that leaves you refreshed and renewed.
